Hendafenda, Mary and Me
When I was 2, I was a forgotten child as the 4th child of 5. One day while playing alone in the backyard sandbox, Hendafenda, a young boy my age and his older sister Mary (always 7) came to visit me. We spent many hours together until at the age of 5 my parents bought a hobby farm and I knew I had to say goodbye. They had their own family. I convinced my sister of 6 to come with me to say goodbye. We walked for hours (before everyone else woke up) had a kleenex full of stuff for a gift. I finally saw an apartment building (had never been in one) and said it was where they lived. We got in the elevator and pressed a button, walked down the hall and knocked on a door I said was it and a little old lady answered the door. When we asked if Hendafenda and Mary were home, she told us no dears but she would make sure she gave them the gift and message. I was pleased. (we had never met this lady)
We found our way home to discover the police were searching for us. I never saw them again but I think of them often.
